Error code C120501 indicates a communication failure between the airbag control unit and the vehicle’s central gateway. This means that data transmission over the CAN bus is disrupted, preventing the airbag system from communicating correctly with other vehicle components and causing it to enter a safety mode.
Technically speaking, the airbag control unit cannot send or receive valid signals via the CAN‑bus network. The central gateway (gateway module) serves as the central hub for data communication within the vehicle. When this connection is interrupted, the airbag control unit is classified as isolated and non‑functional, triggering the warning light.
This fault is stored in the fault memory as either “current” or “permanent” and typically cannot be cleared by a simple reset, as it stems from a physical or electronic cause.
