What does error code 55 on the airbag control unit indicate?
Error code 55 indicates an internal, critical fault in the airbag control unit (ACU). The causes range from stored crash data and software conflicts to tangible hardware damage such as corroded solder joints or defective components. As a result, the control unit locks itself and disables the airbag function.
This code signifies that the control unit’s internal self-test has failed. It is a generic error code pointing to a problem within the module itself, rather than an external sensor. Depending on the specific variant, the issue can be further narrowed down.
For example, variant 55-2x primarily points to stored crash data, while 55-3x often indicates component damage or corrosion. The designation B55-4x signals a severe electronics failure. In all cases, the module enters a protective mode to prevent malfunctions.
How do you recognize error code 55?
The primary symptom of error code 55 is a permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Often, the control unit can no longer be read by standard diagnostic tools (no communication). In the fault memory, the defect is logged as “internal error” or “control unit defective.”
In most cases, the airbag indicator lights up immediately after turning on the ignition and remains on. On some vehicle models, it may stay lit permanently even after a short period, such as 30 seconds.
Another clear sign is the loss of communication. When a workshop attempts to diagnose the airbag system via the OBD interface, the connection to the control unit frequently fails, making it inaccessible to the diagnostic tool.
If the fault is read from a higher-level system, messages like “control unit defective” or “internal error” often appear, directly indicating a malfunction within the control electronics.
What causes error code 55?
The most common cause of error code 55 is stored crash data following an accident, even if the airbags did not deploy. Other reasons include physical defects such as moisture‑induced corrosion at solder joints, damage caused by overvoltage, or failure of individual electronic components on the circuit board.
After a collision—even minor ones—the control unit writes so‑called crash data into its non‑volatile memory. This data permanently locks the module and must be professionally reset to restore functionality.
Hardware defects are also a frequent cause. Water ingress into the vehicle interior can lead to corrosion on sensitive solder joints and traces. Similarly, voltage spikes in the vehicle’s electrical system—such as those resulting from improper jump-starting—can damage delicate microprocessors or memory chips.
In some vehicles, particularly models like the Audi A4/S4 (B6/B7), error code 55 may occur alongside code 65535 (“control unit defective”), suggesting corrupted memory content or a faulty processor.
Which models exhibit error code 55?
Error code 55 affects a range of vehicle brands, especially models from Dodge, BMW, Opel, Volkswagen, and Audi. Notable examples include the first‑generation Dodge Spirit, the BMW Z4, the Opel Zafira A, as well as various VW models such as the Passat B5, Golf 4, and ID.6 E3.

How is error code 55 professionally repaired?

In cases of hardware failure, damaged components such as processors, memory chips, or capacitors are identified and professionally replaced. Corroded solder joints are carefully resoldered to restore electrical connections.
