What does the ‘Crash Recorded’ status indicate in the airbag control unit?
The ‘Crash Recorded’ status is not a conventional error code but rather a safety message indicating that non‑erasable crash data—known as crash data—has been stored in the airbag control unit. This occurs after an accident or an event interpreted as an impact, putting the module into a locked state to prevent reuse without professional diagnostics. A thorough electronic inspection and reset to factory settings are mandatory for safe reactivation.
Technically speaking, this means that following the deployment of airbags or seatbelt pretensioners, specific information about the accident (e.g., impact force, direction) is permanently recorded in a non‑volatile memory area of the control unit, typically EEPROM or flash memory. This storage serves as a manufacturer‑specified safety feature.
Subsequently, the control unit locks itself and can no longer perform its protective functions until the crash data is professionally erased using specialized hardware and software. Simply clearing the fault memory with a standard diagnostic tool will be ineffective, as access to this protected memory area is blocked.
How can you recognize the ‘Crash Recorded’ status?
The primary and unmistakable symptom is a continuously illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. This warning light cannot be reset using standard workshop scanners. What causes the ‘Crash Recorded’ status?
