What does error code DF003 mean in the airbag control unit?

Error code DF003 reports that the ignition circuit of the driver's front airbag is disrupted, meaning either an open circuit or a short circuit. The airbag control unit stores this fault in the fault memory, switches on the airbag warning light and thereby indicates a fault in the driver's front airbag, which it is meant to trigger in an emergency.

The ignition circuit is the electrical path from the control unit to the driver's front airbag. A fault there therefore affects exactly the component that is meant to be triggered in an accident.

The fault therefore does not concern the general power supply of the control unit, but the circuit to a single front airbag.

How do you recognise error code DF003?

You recognise error code DF003 by the airbag warning light staying on permanently and by the entry in the fault memory of the airbag control unit. The code is stored there, cannot be permanently erased and is read out with a diagnostic tool that retrieves the control unit's fault memory via the diagnostic interface.

A permanently lit airbag warning light alone does not yet show that the ignition circuit is disrupted. Only reading out the fault memory shows the code DF003 and with it the affected ignition circuit of the driver's front airbag.

Without a readout, you see only the warning light and do not know which circuit is affected.

What causes error code DF003?

Error code DF003 arises when the ignition circuit of the driver's front airbag is interrupted or short-circuited, meaning the electrical path to the airbag is not intact. Possible causes include the connectors and wiring of this circuit, the driver's airbag module and the airbag control unit itself, although the cause only becomes clear on testing.

• Interrupted or short-circuited wiring in the ignition circuit
• Loose or corroded connectors in the ignition circuit
• A defective driver's airbag module
• Aged electronic components, solder joints or moisture inside the airbag control unit itself

Which cause applies only becomes clear on testing. So do not assign the fault to the control unit too quickly, as wiring and the airbag module are also possible causes.

In which vehicles does error code DF003 occur?

Error code DF003 is known on Renault vehicles, including the models Renault 4 E-Tech, Clio VI, Espace VI, Scénic V, Twingo IV and Twizy I. The list is not complete, and on other vehicles the meaning of the code may differ.

Whether a particular vehicle shows this code can only be established by reading out the fault memory with a diagnostic tool. The list is therefore a guide and does not replace this check, even where make and model match.

Error code DF003 is resolved by first reading out the fault memory with a diagnostic tool and then narrowing down the cause step by step. If the cause lies in connectors, wiring or the driver's airbag module, have these checked thoroughly at a specialist workshop before taking further steps.

Work on the airbag system should be left to qualified hands. If the cause lies in the airbag control unit itself, disconnect the battery first and then remove the control unit.
