Error code DF071 indicates a specific fault in the second ignition circuit of the driver’s front airbag. The airbag control unit has detected an electrical irregularity in this circuit, suggesting an open circuit, a short to ground, or a short between wires. As a result, the system can no longer guarantee the proper functioning of this airbag.

Technically speaking, the control unit continuously monitors the resistance of the ignition circuits. Code DF071 is set when the measured resistance value for ignition circuit 2 falls outside the predefined tolerance range. This is a safety-critical fault that leads to deactivation of the affected airbag and illumination of the warning light.

Other typical triggers include a defective clock spring in the steering wheel or malfunctioning seatbelt pretensioners and buckle switches.

Loose or corroded connectors beneath the driver’s or passenger’s seat are among the main culprits. Vibrations and moisture can create transitional resistances here, which the control unit interprets as a fault in the ignition circuit.

A damaged clock spring—also known as a coil spring or clock spring—is another frequent source of trouble. This component provides the electrical connection to the driver’s airbag in the steering wheel.
