What does error code DF180 mean in the airbag control unit?

On the Renault Clio II, error code DF180 reports a fault in the circuit of the front side impact sensor on the passenger side. The control unit detects a short circuit there or receives no signal. The side airbags on the passenger side are therefore no longer reliably monitored.

The side impact sensor reports a side impact to the airbag control unit. If this signal fails or the circuit is short-circuited, the control unit stores DF180 and switches on the airbag warning light. The fault type, for example short circuit or no signal, follows the base code.

How do you recognise error code DF180?

The airbag warning light stays on, and DF180 is stored in the fault memory. The entry can be read out with a diagnostic tool and returns after being cleared for as long as the sensor circuit is disrupted and the signal is missing.

The fault may also occur only intermittently. The entry then still remains in the fault memory until the cause has been removed. It only becomes visible when read out with a diagnostic tool.

What causes error code DF180?

With error code DF180, the sensor, its wiring, the connector and the airbag control unit are possible causes. What matters is where the circuit is interrupted, short-circuited or disrupted.

• The front side impact sensor on the passenger side is faulty.
• The wiring to the sensor has a short circuit or a break.
• The connector at the sensor or at the control unit has a poor contact.
• The airbag control unit itself no longer reads in the signal correctly.

The test starts at the sensor and the wiring; only after that does the control unit come into focus.

In which vehicles does error code DF180 occur?

Error code DF180 is known on the Renault Clio II. The meaning may differ on other vehicles or control units, and the list is not complete. What counts is what the fault memory of your vehicle shows.

An identical code in another Renault model therefore does not necessarily refer to the same circuit. What counts is the readout on your own vehicle.

How is error code DF180 resolved?

Error code DF180 is resolved by first testing the sensor, wiring and connector on the passenger side. If the cause lies in the airbag control unit, you send it to Airbag24, where it is tested, repaired and checked on the test bench.

Have the fault memory read out with a diagnostic tool and have the side impact sensor, including connector and wiring, tested at a specialist workshop.
