What does error code DF234 mean in the airbag control unit?

Error code DF234 reports a fault in the circuit of the passenger presence sensor, that is, the passenger occupancy detection. It can also indicate a configuration fault of the sensor. The airbag control unit stores the fault and switches on the airbag warning light.

The sensor in the passenger seat tells the airbag control unit whether the seat is occupied. If this signal is missing or does not match the configuration, the control unit cannot control the passenger airbag correctly.

The code is displayed on Renault vehicles. The circuit of the sensor is affected, not an individual airbag. A configuration message does not necessarily mean a hardware defect: the sensor may be fine and still not match the stored setting.

How do you recognise error code DF234?

The airbag warning light stays on permanently, and the code DF234 is in the fault memory of the airbag control unit. It is read out with a diagnostic tool. The entry cannot be cleared permanently for as long as the circuit of the sensor is disturbed.

The fault memory is what matters, because only it shows which circuit is being reported. The airbag warning light alone does not say this.

What causes error code DF234?

The cause is a disturbed circuit of the passenger presence sensor or an incorrect configuration of the sensor. The sensor, its connector, the wiring or the airbag control unit may be behind it.

• The passenger presence sensor in the passenger seat is defective.
• Its connector has contact problems.
• A wire in the circuit is broken or has a short circuit.
• The configuration of the sensor does not match the vehicle.
• The airbag control unit itself has a fault.

Which of these causes applies can only be said after the circuit has been checked.

In which vehicles does error code DF234 occur?

Error code DF234 is known on Renault, namely on the Clio IV. For other vehicles the meaning may differ, and the list is not complete.

Other Renault models with passenger occupancy detection may also show the entry. The fault memory, once read out, clarifies this. For vehicles not listed here, the same code may mean something else, for example a different circuit in the airbag system.

How is error code DF234 resolved?

Have the fault memory read out with a diagnostic tool and have the sensor, connector, wiring and the configuration of the sensor checked first in a specialist workshop. If the cause lies in the airbag control unit, send it to Airbag24 for repair.
