What does error code DTC 5380 mean?
Error code DTC 5380, “Airbag Control Unit Internal Error,” indicates a serious internal fault within the airbag control unit itself. This means that one or more hardware components on the circuit board are no longer functioning properly. The unit is considered defective and can no longer ensure its safety functions.
Technically, this error code points to an irreparable condition caused by internal hardware failures on the circuit board. The control unit detects this critical state through its continuous self-diagnosis and stores the error code. Unlike temporary faults, DTC 5380 generally cannot be cleared simply with a standard diagnostic tool.
The root cause is almost always found on the control unit’s circuit board. This may involve issues with the microprocessor, internal memory, or other critical components. As a safety precaution, the control unit locks itself in this state to prevent unintended airbag deployment and signals the failure of the entire system.
What symptoms indicate DTC 5380?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code DTC 5380 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument panel. This light does not turn off after starting the vehicle. Additionally, the control unit may become unresponsive via the OBD interface, refusing communication with diagnostic tools.
The airbag warning light serves as the system’s direct signal to the driver that a severe malfunction has occurred. In the event of a crash, the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners will no longer function. The entire passive safety system must be regarded as inactive under these circumstances.
In some cases, a text message may also appear on the vehicle’s display, indicating a fault in the restraint system. A professional diagnosis at a workshop will then confirm the specific code 5380, which clearly points to an internal defect in the control unit.
What causes DTC 5380?
The main cause of error code DTC 5380 is an internal hardware failure on the airbag control unit’s circuit board. Another common cause is non-erasable crash data that remains stored after an accident, locking the unit. In rare cases, general communication malfunctions can also lead to this error pattern.
An internal hardware failure is the most frequent cause. Electronic components such as processors, memory chips, or voltage regulators may fail due to age or external factors like moisture. Defective solder joints on the circuit board can also trigger this issue by disrupting internal component communication.
Following a crash, airbag control units often store irreversible crash data. These records lock the unit and prevent reuse without specialized repair to reset the memory contents. Even if no airbags deployed, an impact can trigger the storage of such data and result in error DTC 5380.
