What does error code E607 mean?
Error code E607 indicates a specific internal fault in the airbag control unit. This typically points to a hardware issue, such as problems with the internal memory, damaged components on the circuit board, or communication malfunctions within the device. As a result, the control unit can no longer reliably perform its core functions, like detecting crash signals.
The airbag control unit, also known as the SRS module (Supplemental Restraint System), is the central control unit for the entire occupant protection system. It processes signals from various sensors to ensure that airbags and seatbelt pretensioners are deployed precisely and promptly in the event of a collision.
When error code E607 appears, the unit’s internal self-diagnosis has detected a critical fault. These are usually physical issues, such as internal hardware failures, defects in the memory chip, or disruptions in the internal communication on the circuit board. The system then switches to a safety mode to prevent unintended deployment.
What symptoms indicate E607?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code E607 is a permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, during diagnostics via the OBD interface, the control unit may become unresponsive or only report the specific internal error code E607, while other system queries fail.
The activated warning light is the clearest sign. It remains lit after starting the vehicle, signaling to the driver that the airbag system is not operational. In the event of a crash, there is a risk that the airbags will not deploy.
In the workshop, the problem often manifests as failed communication. A diagnostic tool may be unable to establish a connection with the airbag control unit or may read only error code E607, indicating an irreparable internal condition.
What causes E607?
The causes of error code E607 are usually found at the hardware level of the control unit. Common triggers include internal electronic faults, such as damaged circuit board contacts or defective memory chips. Adverse environmental factors—especially moisture from water damage—as well as faulty cables or poor connector contacts can also lead to this error.
A major cause is defects in electronic components on the control unit’s circuit board. This can occur due to aging, vibrations, or thermal stress. Memory issues, where data stored in the chip becomes corrupted, can also result in this error pattern.
External influences, such as moisture, are a frequent reason for failure. Penetrating water can cause corrosion on the circuit board and short circuits, which may irreparably damage the control unit if not addressed promptly.
The peripheral components can also play a role. Faulty cables, poor connector contacts, or mechanical stresses—such as those caused by steering wheel movement (coil spring) or seat adjustments—can lead to voltage spikes or signal interference that damages the control unit internally.
Crash data stored after an accident can also lock the control unit. Although this is a data‑related condition, it can block normal operation and is often reset during repairs.
Which vehicles are affected by E607?
Error code E607 primarily occurs in certain models from Peugeot and Citroën. Specifically, series such as the Peugeot 207 and RCZ, as well as the Citroën C4 Picasso and Grand Picasso, are frequently impacted.
