What does error code E691 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code E691 indicates a serious internal fault in the airbag control unit (SRS). This code typically points to a hardware defect, such as faulty circuits, defective components on the circuit board, or damage to the internal memory (EEPROM/Flash). The control unit can no longer ensure its safety functions and shuts down the entire airbag system.
Technically, this error code is triggered when the control unit’s internal self-diagnosis detects an anomaly that makes safe operation impossible. This could be an internal circuit failure, where components like capacitors, resistors, or integrated circuits (ICs) are no longer functioning correctly.
The device’s memory is often affected as well, leading to data loss or malfunctions in the Flash memory or EEPROM. As a result, the control unit can no longer manage connected sensors and airbags, posing a significant safety risk.
How do you recognize error E691?
The main symptom of error E691 is a permanently illuminated or flashing airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, the control unit often cannot be read by a diagnostic tool because communication is disrupted. Accompanying error messages may appear on the display, indicating a malfunction in the restraint system.
The most obvious sign is the active airbag warning light. It does not turn off after starting the vehicle, clearly signaling to the driver that the safety system is disabled. In the event of a crash, the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners will not deploy.
Another clear indication is the lack of communication with the control unit. Workshops using an OBD-II scanner cannot establish a connection to the airbag module to read the fault memory or retrieve live data. The unit does not respond to requests over the CAN bus.
Depending on the vehicle model, additional text messages may also appear on the onboard computer or infotainment screen, alerting users to service requirements for the airbag system.
What causes error code E691?
The most common cause of error code E691 is internal hardware defects on the control unit’s circuit board. These include faulty electronic components such as capacitors, resistors, or ICs. Other causes may involve memory errors in the EEPROM, disruptions in CAN-bus communication, or damage caused by voltage surges or moisture ingress.
Internal circuit failures are the primary cause. Aging processes or thermal stress can lead to defects in critical components responsible for processing sensor data and triggering the airbags.
Communication problems on the CAN bus can also play a role, but they are often a consequence of the underlying hardware defect. Due to the fault, the control unit can no longer communicate with other systems in the vehicle.
Memory errors in the Flash memory or EEPROM represent another specific hardware-related cause. Here, the memory chips themselves become damaged, resulting in data loss or incorrect configuration data and rendering the unit inoperable.
External factors such as surge damage—caused, for example, by a faulty battery or jump-start—and moisture ingress can likewise lead to short circuits and damage to the circuit board.
