Error code ET076 indicates a critical, internal hardware failure in the airbag control unit. This means that the unit’s self-diagnostic system has detected an irreparable fault within its own electronics. As a result, for safety reasons, the entire airbag system is deactivated.

Technically speaking, this error signifies that one or more key components on the control unit’s circuit board have failed. These may include the main processor, memory chips, or other critical circuits. The control unit classifies this condition as so severe that it completely shuts down its functionality to prevent any erroneous deployment of the airbags.

This error code is generated directly by the control unit itself and stored in the fault memory. It does not point to issues with external components such as sensors or wiring; rather, it clearly isolates the fault to the control unit itself.

What symptoms indicate error ET076?

The primary symptom of error ET076 is a continuously illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, diagnostic tools may no longer be able to establish communication with the control unit. Most importantly, the airbags are fully disabled.

The airbag warning light (often an SRS symbol or a stylized figure with an airbag) illuminates after starting the vehicle and remains on. This is the legally mandated warning signal informing the driver that the restraint system is inoperative.

In some cases, the light may begin to flash intermittently before settling into a permanent state. This suggests an emerging hardware defect inside the control unit.
