What does error code F20004 mean?
Error code F20004, also known as 20004, indicates a severe internal hardware fault in the airbag control unit with part number F20004. This error specifically occurs in the Porsche 911 Targa 4S (991) and results in complete deactivation of the airbag system, as well as a loss of communication with diagnostic tools.
Technically, the root cause lies directly within the control unit’s electronics. Internal components such as capacitors or microcontrollers may fail, or permanently stored crash data following an accident can lock the device’s processor, leading to an internal lockdown.
As a result, the control unit can no longer communicate via the CAN bus with other vehicle systems or external diagnostic equipment. As a safety precaution, the entire airbag system is deactivated to prevent unintended deployment.
How do you recognize error code F20004?
The primary symptom is a continuously illuminated or flashing airbag or SRS warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, no connection can be established between the control unit and an OBD diagnostic tool; messages such as “Control Unit Fault” or “No Communication” appear. Stored crash data cannot be erased.
The most obvious sign is the active airbag warning light, which remains on even after the engine has started, indicating a critical, safety‑relevant fault in the restraint system.
A key characteristic of error F20004 is the complete loss of communication. Workshops can no longer access the control unit with their diagnostic tools to read, analyze, or clear errors, making conventional diagnostics impossible.
If the vehicle has been involved in a crash, the stored crash data cannot be reset. In some cases, the vehicle identification number is even transmitted incorrectly by the unit. A vehicle with this defect will fail the main inspection (TÜV), as the entire airbag system is non‑functional.
What causes error code F20004?
The primary cause of error code F20004 is an internal electronic failure within the control unit itself. This can be triggered by component failure, short circuits, water damage, or reverse polarity. Another common cause is permanently stored crash data after an accident, which locks the control unit.
The fault is usually due to physical damage to the circuit board or its components, including defective microprocessors, memory chips, or capacitors essential for data processing and system control.
Following a crash, the control unit stores so‑called crash data. These records put the unit into a locked state that cannot be cleared using standard diagnostic tools.
External factors such as voltage spikes from jump-starts, electrical shorts, or moisture ingress can also permanently damage the control unit’s sensitive electronics.
Important: Before confirming the control unit as the source of the problem, for the Porsche 991 it is essential to rule out external causes, such as a faulty coil spring, loose connectors, or issues with seat occupancy sensors.

Error code F20004 is highly specific and occurs exclusively in the airbag control unit bearing the identical part number F20004. This particular control unit is installed primarily in one specific Porsche model, making diagnosis straightforward.
