What does error code FA mean in the airbag control unit?

The error code FA indicates a critical communication fault between the airbag control unit and the external satellite sensors. Technically, the code stands for “satellite sensor bus communication error.” The control unit cannot receive or transmit valid data from the sensors, which jeopardizes the entire airbag functionality.

This error code is classified as critical because it directly points to a disruption in data exchange with the satellite sensors responsible for crash detection. These sensors are distributed throughout the vehicle and provide the central airbag control unit with crucial information about the type and severity of an impact.

If communication via the sensor bus is interrupted, the safety system enters an undefined state. The control unit can no longer reliably determine whether and which airbags or seatbelt pretensioners need to be deployed. For safety reasons, the system is often deactivated, and the airbag warning light illuminates.

How do you recognize error code FA?

The main symptom of error code FA is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, communication between the diagnostic tool and the affected sensors is often impossible. The fault memory may also contain crash data that prevents normal operation.

The most obvious sign is the continuously lit airbag warning light. It does not turn off after starting the vehicle, indicating a serious, self-monitored fault in the system.

In some cases, error code FA is also caused by stored crash data. After an accident, the control unit locks itself and may interrupt communication with certain system components to prevent false activations.

Defective satellite sensors or their connections can also disrupt communication across the entire bus and trigger error code FA. Corrosion caused by moisture is a typical culprit here.
