What does the error code “Faulty Airbag Module” mean?
The generic error code “Faulty Airbag Module” indicates a critical defect in the airbag control unit, often triggered after a crash by stored crash data (hard codes) or internal hardware failures. In such cases, the module locks itself to prevent safety risks and may even block vehicle startup. A simple reset via OBD-II diagnostics is then no longer possible.
Following a collision, the airbag control unit irrevocably stores crash data in its internal memory. This process, also known as “crash lock,” is a safety feature designed to prohibit further driving with a potentially compromised safety system. The module enters a locked state.
Technically, this fault can stem from various causes: internal electronic malfunctions, electrical circuit issues, failure of connected sensors, or a pyrotechnic fuse (pyrofuse) that has been activated after the accident.
A distinction is made between soft error codes (soft codes), which can usually be cleared, and hard error codes (hard codes). Entries caused by crash data are hard codes that remain in the module and require specialized repair or professional resetting.
What symptoms indicate this fault?
The primary symptom is a permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, especially in models like the Tesla Model 3, the vehicle may refuse to start after an accident. This occurs because the locked airbag control unit reports this condition to the vehicle’s central electronics as a safety precaution.
The airbag warning light remains continuously lit after engine start-up and does not turn off. This is a clear sign that the entire airbag system is disabled and would not deploy in the event of another collision.
Another characteristic may be the inability to start the vehicle. The locked control unit prevents the ignition sequence from proceeding, thereby avoiding operation of the vehicle with a non-functional safety system.
When diagnosing with a standard OBD-II scanner, communication with the airbag control unit may fail, or the stored hard code cannot be erased. Specialized diagnostic tools are required to gain access at all.
What causes the “Faulty Airbag Module” error?
The main cause is the storage of crash data after an accident, resulting in a permanent “hard code” in the control unit’s memory. Additional reasons include internal defects, electrical circuit faults, failure of impact sensors, or activation of a pyrotechnic fuse (pyrofuse) that cuts off power supply. These issues are almost exclusively hardware-related.
After a crash, relevant data is recorded in the control unit. This data record cannot be erased using standard workshop scanners and requires a specialized electronic reset.
A common accompanying issue following an impact is an activated or blocked pyrofuse. This pyrotechnic fuse disconnects the battery from the vehicle’s electrical system during a crash to prevent fires. Once triggered, the control unit no longer receives proper voltage supply.
Destroyed crash or side-impact sensors, as well as faulty wiring, can also lead the control unit to report a persistent fault, since it fails to receive plausible signals from critical components.
