What does error code 3 in the airbag control unit mean?
Error code 3 indicates a serious internal defect within the airbag control unit itself. Typically, this code points to a hardware failure, such as a defective control unit chip, a damaged circuit board, or a faulty memory module. The control unit can no longer guarantee its safety functions and stores this non‑erasable error code.
This specific diagnostic error code, recorded in the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) control unit’s fault memory, clearly signals that the module has diagnosed itself as defective. It is not an issue with an external sensor but rather a problem at the heart of the safety system.
From an electronic standpoint, this means that internal self‑tests have failed. This may be caused by defective microprocessors, corrupted data in the EEPROM memory, or burnt‑out traces on the circuit board. As a result, the control unit enters a safety mode to prevent erroneous deployment of the airbags.
What symptoms indicate error 3?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error 3 is a permanently illuminated airbag warning light (SRS light) in the instrument cluster. This light does not turn off after starting the vehicle. Often, the control unit cannot be read using standard diagnostic equipment, nor can the error code be cleared.
The active warning light informs the driver that the entire airbag system is disabled. In the event of a crash, the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners will not deploy, posing a significant safety risk.
An additional technical symptom appears in the workshop: attempts to clear the fault memory with common diagnostic tools fail. Error 3 is immediately re‑set because it represents a permanent hardware or memory fault that cannot be resolved by a simple reset.
What causes error 3?
The most common cause of error 3 is hardware failure, often triggered by external factors. These include water damage leading to corrosion and short circuits, as well as crash data stored in the control unit after an accident. Strong voltage spikes, power outages, or mechanical shocks can also damage the internal electronics.
A frequent trigger is water damage. Penetrating moisture causes corrosion on the circuit board and can create short circuits between sensitive electronic components, resulting in permanent error 3.
After a collision, so‑called crash data is irrevocably stored in the control unit’s memory. This data locks the module and cannot be erased using standard workshop testers, leading to a persistent fault.
Electrical issues in the vehicle’s electrical system are another major cause. Severe voltage surges—such as those caused by a faulty alternator or jump-starting with reversed polarity—can irreparably damage the delicate chips inside the control unit.
Strong mechanical impacts, like a severe blow to the vehicle tunnel or a door slammed shut with extreme force, can also be interpreted by the control unit’s internal sensors as a crash event, locking the system.
In which vehicles does error 3 occur?
Error code 3 is particularly well documented as a known issue in the Ferrari 348 TS F119. However, this internal control unit defect can theoretically occur in vehicles from other premium manufacturers such as Porsche, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, or Volvo, especially following accidents, water damage, or electrical malfunctions.

How is error 3 professionally repaired?
Professional repair of error 3 is a multi‑step process requiring component‑level analysis. After sending the unit to Airbag24, the control unit is opened, the circuit board inspected for damage, and defective components such as chips or memory modules replaced. Subsequently, stubborn crash data is erased using specialized equipment.
The procedure begins with removing the airbag control unit from the vehicle and securely shipping it in. In the laboratory, a precise diagnosis is performed to pinpoint the exact source of the fault on the circuit board—whether it’s water damage, a short circuit, or a defective memory chip.
Next, hardware repair takes place. Defective electronic components are carefully desoldered and replaced with new, specification‑compliant parts. In cases of water damage, the circuit board is professionally cleaned and sealed to prevent further damage.
Following this, the control unit’s software is restored. Using specialized programming equipment, all crash data stored in memory is completely erased, and the fault memory is reset. The unit is returned to its original, error‑free condition.
Finally, the repaired control unit undergoes a comprehensive functional test on the test bench, simulating flawless communication and operation of all system components. Upon successful testing, the unit is ready for installation (plug-and-play), and a 12‑month warranty is provided on the repair performed.
