What does error code 9004 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code 9004 indicates a critical overvoltage condition in the airbag control unit. This excessive voltage often causes permanent damage to the internal electronics, particularly to voltage regulators and other sensitive components. This compromises the safe operation of the entire airbag system and necessitates professional electronic repair of the control unit.
Technically speaking, this is a severe hardware fault. The overvoltage physically damages components on the control unit’s circuit board, permanently impairing its functionality. Simply clearing the fault memory or disconnecting the battery will therefore be ineffective, as the underlying electronic damage remains.
Due to this defect, the control unit can no longer correctly process signals from the crash sensors and reliably deploy the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners in an emergency. Consequently, the safety of vehicle occupants is no longer guaranteed.

The activated airbag warning light is the most obvious sign. It indicates that during the vehicle’s self‑test at startup, a critical fault was detected, prompting the system to shut down preventively.
Another common feature is the loss of communication with the control unit. Workshops are unable to establish a connection via the OBD interface because the internal electronics responsible for diagnostic communication have been damaged by the overvoltage.
