What does the “Internal Fault” error code in the airbag control unit signify?
The “Internal Fault” error code indicates a critical, internal hardware failure in the airbag control module (SRSCM). This means that one or more electronic components on the circuit board—such as memory chips (EEPROM), processors, or capacitors—have sustained irreparable damage. The system deems itself unreliable and disables the airbag functions for safety reasons.
From an electronic standpoint, during its self-test, the control unit detects an internal condition that no longer ensures proper operation in the event of a crash. Common causes are often physical, such as damage from overvoltage after a jump-start or due to component aging.
This fault should not be confused with a temporary software issue or a simple communication error; it points to a permanent defect requiring repair at the component level.
