What does error code P1642 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code P1642 is primarily a diagnostic instruction to read the fault memory of the airbag control unit (SRS). It also indicates a general malfunction in the airbag system, often caused by crash data stored after an accident or by internal hardware defects on the circuit board.
In diagnostic systems, especially for VAG and OBD‑compatible vehicles, this code frequently appears with the direct prompt “Please read the fault memory of the airbag control unit.” This suggests that the engine control unit has detected an issue in the airbag system and refers it to the SRS module for further analysis.
Technically speaking, code P1642 can also point to a general functional failure of the airbag control unit. This includes internal anomalies on the circuit board that prevent the system from operating safely and may put the control unit into a locked state.
How do you recognize error code P1642?
The primary symptom of error P1642 is a continuously illuminated or flashing airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Often, communication with the airbag control unit cannot be established using a diagnostic tool. In some cases, error code 65535 (control unit defective) is also stored.
The permanently lit airbag warning light is the most obvious sign. It does not turn off even after restarting the vehicle, indicating to the driver that the passive safety system is not operational.
Another common symptom is the control unit’s lack of response to diagnostic requests. If a workshop attempts to read the fault memory, communication fails, suggesting an internal blockage or defect within the module.
Occasionally, error P1642 is accompanied by error 65535, which explicitly reports a defective control unit. This often confirms an internal hardware failure as the underlying cause.
What causes error code P1642?
The most common cause of error code P1642 is crash data stored in the airbag control unit’s memory after an accident, which locks the module. Other causes include internal hardware defects on the circuit board, insufficient supply voltage, or communication problems on the CAN bus.
After airbags or seatbelt pretensioners are deployed, crash data is irrevocably recorded in the control unit’s memory. This lockout is a manufacturer‑imposed safety measure designed to prevent reuse of a potentially damaged device, but it can be lifted through professional repair.
Internal defects represent another major cause. Damage to electronic components on the circuit board—such as that caused by overvoltage—can disrupt the control unit’s self‑diagnostic functions and trigger error P1642.
Insufficient power supply to the control unit or disruptions in CAN‑bus communication may also contribute, though they are less frequent than stored crash data or direct hardware defects.
In which vehicles does error P1642 occur?
Error code P1642 is frequently diagnosed in vehicles from the PSA Group and related brands. Models particularly affected include the Citroën CX II, the second‑generation Lancia Y, and the Rover 75. It can also appear in certain VW and Audi models, such as the Passat B4 or Polo.
