What does error code P1645 mean?
Error code P1645 is a manufacturer-specific OBD2 code with varying meanings. For Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, and Skoda, it indicates a CAN bus fault in the all-wheel-drive system, signaling a communication interruption within the vehicle network. For other manufacturers, this code may point to a malfunction of the fuel pump resistance switch or the accelerator pedal potentiometer.
The OBD2 error code P1645 is not universal; its meaning varies significantly depending on the vehicle manufacturer. Therefore, a precise diagnosis always requires consideration of the specific vehicle make.
Within the VAG group (Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda), P1645 specifically refers to an issue with the CAN bus of the all-wheel-drive system (4WD). The message “no signal” suggests a disruption in communication between the all-wheel-drive control unit and other systems, such as the airbag control unit.
For other vehicle manufacturers, code P1645 carries a completely different meaning. It can indicate a malfunction of the fuel pump resistance switch or a problem with the accelerator pedal potentiometer, affecting engine control.
The airbag control unit itself is the central component of the safety system. It processes signals from crash sensors, determines the timing for airbag deployment, ensures power supply via an ignition capacitor, and continuously performs self-diagnosis of the entire system.
How do you recognize error P1645?

Since this code on VAG vehicles points to a CAN bus fault, communication problems may also occur. In the workshop, this often manifests as the diagnostic tool being unable to connect—or only sporadically connecting—to the all-wheel-drive or airbag control unit.
What causes error code P1645?
The main cause of P1645 in VAG models is a CAN bus communication fault, often due to cable breaks or corroded connectors. More general causes of airbag system errors include defective coil springs in the steering wheel, water ingress into the control unit causing short circuits, or damaged sensors and their wiring.
Specifically for VW, Audi, Seat, and Skoda vehicles, the root cause is typically a fault in the CAN data bus. A disrupted signal transmission—caused by damaged cables, loose connectors, or corrosion—prevents communication between control units.
A common source of errors in airbag systems, especially in three-door vehicles, is poor connector contacts beneath the front seats. Frequent seat adjustments can strain the cables and connectors of side airbags or seat occupancy detection, leading to intermittent connections.
The coil spring in the steering wheel is another component subject to heavy wear from constant steering movements. A defect in this coil spring interrupts the connection to the driver’s airbag and is recognized as an error by the control unit.
Infiltrating water can cause short circuits within the control unit itself, irreparably damaging the electronics. Defective external sensors or their wiring can also be logged as system faults, triggering the airbag warning light.
