What does error code P1651 indicate in the airbag control unit?
Error code P1651 signals an internal fault in the airbag control unit, specifically associated with part number P1651 in the Dacia 1310 CN I. Typically, this code points to issues with the power supply or communication malfunctions that require electronic repair of the unit and disable the entire airbag system.
Technically speaking, P1651 indicates a condition where the control unit locks itself due to a detected internal error. This can be triggered by an unstable power supply, a short circuit on the circuit board, or stored crash data following an accident.
In Dacia or Renault systems, this fault occurs and may correlate with code P1642 (reading the airbag control unit’s fault memory). The cause is almost always an internal fault within the control unit itself, not in the engine control unit, even though the code structure may appear similar.

Even if communication is briefly possible, error code P1651 cannot be permanently cleared. It reappears immediately because the underlying cause—whether a hardware defect or stored crash data—remains unresolved.
What causes error code P1651?
The most common cause of P1651 is the storage of crash data after an accident, which automatically disables the control unit. Similarly, internal electronic faults such as improper power supply (too high or too low), short circuits, or defective components on the circuit board can trigger this error.
Following an accident in which airbags or seatbelt pretensioners have deployed, the control unit irrevocably stores crash data. This is a safety measure that locks the unit, making repair or replacement essential.
Internal hardware defects represent another key cause. These include voltage issues—similar to those seen in related codes like 9651: interruption—as well as overvoltage or faulty sensors and cables that lead to internal damage.
Although the fault often originates in the control unit, external factors such as broken wiring, moisture in connectors, or defects in the seat occupancy mat can also disrupt the electronics and secondarily trigger error P1651.
In particular, for P1651, a circuit malfunction—such as in an actuator within analog systems—is frequently identified as the root cause. This results in the persistent activation of the warning light and a complete system lockout.
