What does error code P1652 mean?
Error code P1652 indicates a serious problem in the airbag control unit. It often points to an internal fault, such as a ROM error (memory failure), or to communication issues with other control units, for example, the transmission control unit. In such cases, repairing the internal control system is usually unavoidable.
Technically speaking, P1652 means that the self-diagnosis of the airbag or transmission control unit has detected a fault. This may be directly stored in the control unit’s memory (Read-Only Memory, ROM), indicating a hardware defect in the memory chip itself. Such errors prevent the system from booting up correctly and fulfilling its safety functions.
The precise definition of the code can vary depending on the vehicle manufacturer and the diagnostic tool used. However, it generally serves as a clear indication that the control unit can no longer reliably perform its primary task—monitoring and controlling the restraint system.
How do you recognize error code P1652?
The main symptom of error code P1652 is a permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument panel. Additionally, the control unit may become unresponsive to diagnostic tools, making it impossible to read or clear the fault memory, which suggests an internal system failure.
The airbag warning light is the most obvious sign. It alerts the driver that the entire airbag system is disabled and would not deploy in the event of a crash, meaning the vehicle no longer meets safety requirements.
Another characteristic is when error code P1652 reappears immediately after an attempt to clear it. This confirms that the underlying cause has not been resolved and that a permanent defect exists within the system, requiring physical inspection and repair.
What causes P1652?
The primary cause of error P1652 is an internal defect in the airbag control unit, often a so‑called ROM error—a damaged memory chip. Other potential causes include communication problems with other control units, or external factors such as faulty wiring, poor connector contacts, or short circuits caused by water ingress.
An internal ROM error is a classic hardware failure. Here, the memory chip storing the control unit’s core operating software is damaged, preventing the unit from completing its initialization routine and resulting in an error state.
Before attributing the fault to the control unit itself, external sources of error must be systematically ruled out. This includes carefully inspecting wiring and connectors for corrosion, breaks, or short circuits. Adjacent sensors can also, in rare cases, send false signals leading to secondary errors.
Following a crash in which airbags have deployed, the control unit is often internally locked. It stores so‑called crash data and becomes effectively “exhausted.” This too can trigger error P1652 and requires professional servicing to restore full functionality.
