What does error code DF194 in the airbag control unit indicate?
On Renault vehicles, error code DF194 indicates that permanent crash data has been stored in the airbag control unit following an impact or accident. This data storage results in an irreversible system lockout, disabling the airbag function and preventing the fault memory from being cleared.
Technically, this means the control unit enters a safety mode as intended by the manufacturer. The entry “Computer must be replaced after impact” is a direct instruction in the fault log. The control unit deliberately blocks further operation to enforce inspection and repair after a potentially safety‑critical event.
Commonly affected are Bosch control units with part numbers such as 610 79 61 00 (also 610796100), corresponding to Bosch references 0 285 001 509 or 0 285 001 817. The lockout is deeply embedded in the electronics and cannot be overridden using standard workshop diagnostic tools.
How can you recognize error DF194?
The primary symptom of error DF194 is a continuously illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, the fault memory cannot be cleared, and the control unit may completely refuse communication with the diagnostic tool, often accompanied by the message “Airbag control unit locked.”
A typical scenario is when the airbag light illuminates immediately after a minor accident or a more severe impact—where only the seatbelt pretensioners may have activated—and fails to turn off. Any attempt to clear the fault code using a standard diagnostic tester will fail.
Depending on the vehicle model and system configuration, specific error messages may appear in the diagnostic log. These include, alongside the clear statement “Computer must be replaced after impact,” entries such as “Multiplex information for electric power steering invalid,” indicating a networking issue.
In some cases, error code DF194 is stored together with code DF193 (“Passenger airbag lock status change”), pointing to a more complex problem within the safety system after the impact.
Why does error code DF194 occur?
The main cause of error code DF194 is the storage of crash data in the airbag control unit’s internal non-volatile memory following an accident. Even minor collisions where no airbags deploy can trigger sensor readings that permanently lock the control unit.
This behavior is a manufacturer‑implemented safety measure. Once the control unit registers an impact exceeding certain thresholds, a flag is set in memory, preventing further use without a specialized reset. This ensures that the entire system undergoes professional inspection after an accident.
A special situation arises when error DF194 is reported in conjunction with power steering issues—for example, on a Renault Mégane Cabrio. In such cases, the code may result from a defect in the steering column. Here, the primary cause—the steering column—must be repaired first before addressing the airbag control unit.

Error code DF194 predominantly affects various Renault models. Particularly common are the Renault Kangoo II, Mégane II, Modus, and Scenic III. Repairs are available for these and other models equipped with identical control units.
