What does error code U0123 mean?
Error code U0123 indicates a loss of communication with the yaw rate sensor. It is a CAN‑bus network issue where the airbag control unit no longer receives valid data from the sensor, compromising the functionality of the entire safety system.
Technically, this fault is described as “Lost Communication With Yaw Rate Sensor.” The airbag control unit (ECU) continuously monitors signals from the yaw rate sensor, which are critical for assessing vehicle dynamics and determining whether to deploy the airbags. If these signals are missing or appear implausible, the system sets error code U0123.
This error code does not directly signal an imminent airbag deployment; rather, it is purely a network fault. It indicates that the communication link between the ECU and the sensor has been disrupted, preventing proper operation of the airbag system—and often other connected systems such as ESP or ABS.
How do you recognize error U0123?
The primary symptom of error code U0123 is a permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, warning messages related to vehicle dynamics systems (e.g., ESP/ABS) may appear, since the yaw rate sensor provides data relevant to multiple systems.
The active airbag warning light clearly indicates that the restraint system is not fully functional. In the event of a crash, correct and timely airbag deployment can no longer be guaranteed.
In vehicles with complex networking, such as the Porsche Panamera, failure of the yaw rate sensor may also result in deactivation of driver assistance systems that rely on its data.
What causes U0123?
The most common causes of error code U0123 are physical issues in the connection between the airbag control unit and the yaw rate sensor. These include defective connectors, cable breaks in the CAN‑bus line, or faulty power supply. Internal defects in the sensor or ECU are also possible.
At the top of the troubleshooting list are often damaged or corrosion‑affected connectors and inadequate ground connections. Even bent pins or moisture ingress can completely disrupt the sensitive CAN‑bus communication.
Another frequent cause is cable interruptions (open circuits) or short circuits in the CAN‑high and CAN‑low lines. Such damage typically results from mechanical stress—such as crushing—or from material fatigue due to aging of the wiring harness.
Rarer but equally relevant are unstable or missing supply voltages at the ECU or sensor, caused by blown fuses, faulty relays, or general onboard electrical system problems. Internal hardware faults on the airbag ECU’s circuit board—such as cold solder joints or damaged SMD components—can also trigger this error.
In some cases, crash data stored within the ECU itself may interfere with normal operation, while a lack of proper initialization or calibration after component replacement can likewise lead to the error being logged.
Which models experience U0123?
Communication error U0123 is a generic network code (U‑code) that can occur across brands. However, specific configurations are found in US‑made vehicles like Dodge and in sophisticated vehicle dynamics systems such as those used by Porsche, where sensors and networking are manufacturer‑specific.

How is error U0123 professionally repaired?

If the control unit contains crash data that prevents normal operation, this data is securely erased in compliance with legal and technical requirements. Before any intervention, the sensitive contents of the EEPROM or flash memory are read out and backed up for safety.
