What does error code U0174 mean?
Error code U0174 indicates a loss of communication between the airbag control unit (SRS) and a specific restraint system sensor, known as “Sensor E.” This is typically a side‑impact sensor or a seatbelt buckle sensor. The interruption in the data link prevents the control unit from monitoring the sensor’s status, thereby affecting the airbag functionality.
Technically speaking, U0174 means that the central airbag control unit (Supplemental Restraint System, SRS) is no longer receiving the expected signals from the so‑called “Sensor E.” This sensor is a critical component of the safety system and is often installed as a satellite sensor in exposed locations such as the doors or seat rails.
If communication fails, the control unit can no longer access information from this sensor during a collision. As a result, the system enters a safety mode, potentially deactivating parts of the airbag system and setting the error code to alert the driver.
How do you recognize error U0174?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code U0174 is the persistent illumination of the airbag warning light on the instrument panel. After starting the vehicle, the light does not extinguish as usual but remains on, indicating a fault in the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) and signaling an immediate need for inspection.
In most cases, the glowing SRS or airbag warning light is the only visible indication for the driver. Typically, there are no noticeable effects on the vehicle’s driving behavior, since the error code affects only the passive safety system.
During diagnostics at the workshop, reading additional specific parameters from the affected sensor may fail. The diagnostic tool will then also report a missing response from that component.
What causes U0174?
The most common cause of error U0174 is physical damage to the wiring or connectors leading to Sensor E. This includes loose connectors, corrosion due to water ingress, or cable breaks caused by mechanical stress. A defective sensor itself or an internal fault within the airbag control unit can also trigger the error.
Defective or loose connectors are often the primary issue. Especially on moving parts like seats or doors, connectors can loosen over time or corrode due to moisture, disrupting signal transmission.
Sensor E itself—often a side‑impact sensor or seatbelt buckle sensor—can also fail. An internal defect in the sensor prevents communication with the main control unit.
Another typical cause is a broken cable or short circuit in the wiring harness leading to the sensor. This can result from mechanical stress, aging, or water intrusion, for example through leaking door seals.
If the fault cannot be traced back to the wiring or the sensor, the airbag control unit itself becomes the focus. An internal defect or a failed self‑test may prevent the control unit from maintaining communication with one of its sensors.
Which vehicles are affected by U0174?
The communication error U0174 occurs across multiple brands, as the basic principle of sensor monitoring is similar in many vehicles. This error is particularly common in Chrysler models, such as the Reliant K, as well as in vehicles from Dodge, Ford, Skoda, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and VW.
