Error code U111100 indicates a functional limitation in the airbag control unit due to a missing message. This points to a serious communication failure in the CAN bus system, where the control unit fails to receive an expected message from another control unit or sensor, such as the tilt-angle indicator. As a result, the airbag system is placed into a safety mode.
Technically, this error code means that a critical data transmission has not occurred. Electronically, the microprocessor in the airbag control unit is waiting for a specific data packet on the CAN bus, but it never arrives, triggering a safety shutdown.
The cause often lies in a physical break in the data line or a hardware defect on the control unit’s circuit board itself, preventing proper signal reception. Without this information, the system cannot guarantee operational readiness and deactivates as a precautionary measure.
How do you recognize error U111100?
The primary symptom of error U111100 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, the airbag control unit may become unresponsive when connected to a diagnostic tool. Attempts to clear the fault memory often fail because the error reappears immediately.
The lit airbag warning light clearly indicates that the entire restraint system is non-functional. In the event of a crash, the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners will not deploy, posing a significant safety risk.
Another clear sign is the persistence of the error. Even if communication with a diagnostic tool is briefly restored and the code is cleared, it reappears instantly during the next system check. This confirms that the underlying communication disruption remains unresolved.
What are the causes of U111100?
The main cause of error code U111100 is a disruption in communication on the CAN bus. This can result from an electrical fault on the airbag control unit’s circuit board, a damaged cable connection, or a malfunctioning transmitting sensor, such as the tilt-angle indicator. Following a crash, stored crash data may also block normal operation.
At the electronic level, defects often occur in the CAN transceiver chips or in the circuit traces on the control unit’s board. These components are responsible for sending and receiving data signals, and even a cold solder joint or a microscopic crack can lead to complete communication failure.
