What does error code U1213 mean?
Error code U1213 indicates a critical communication failure between the airbag control unit (ORC) and the ESP/ABS control unit via the CAN bus. The airbag module receives invalid or no data, resulting in deactivation of the entire restraint system and illumination of the warning light.
Technically speaking, this code stands for “SCP J1850 invalid or missing primary data.” This means that essential information required for the airbag system’s operation—such as wheel speed data from the ABS/ESP module—is not reaching the airbag control unit correctly. Without this data, the system cannot function safely and therefore shuts down.
Although U1213 is logged as a communication error, the root cause usually lies in the hardware. The issue may be in the transmitting ABS/ESP control unit, the physical wiring (CAN bus), or the receiving airbag control unit itself.
What symptoms are associated with U1213?
The main symptom of error U1213 is a permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Often, the airbag system is completely disabled. Accompanying issues may include malfunctions in the power steering, incorrect speed readings, or parking brake warning messages.
The most obvious sign is the activated airbag warning light, which fails to extinguish after starting the vehicle, indicating that the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) module has detected a serious fault and is unable to operate.
Since many vehicle systems rely on data from the ABS/ESP module, its failure can trigger cascading effects. Commonly affected systems include tire pressure monitoring, headlight control, and the electronic parking brake. In some cases, the speedometer display may also fail.
In addition to error U1213 in the airbag control unit, other error codes such as U11EA-00 or C164A/B may be stored in other control units, also pointing to a disrupted vehicle network.
What causes U1213?
The most common causes of U1213 are physical problems in the data connection, such as a faulty wiring harness, oxidized contacts, or a malfunctioning CAN bus. Equally often, an internal defect in the ABS/ESP control unit prevents it from sending signals. An unstable power supply is another frequent source of the problem.
First and foremost are issues with the CAN bus or the wiring harness. Loose connectors at the airbag or ABS control unit, corroded pins due to moisture, or a broken cable disrupt data transmission and inevitably lead to error code U1213.
A further major cause is an internal electronic fault in the ABS/ESP control unit. If this module stops transmitting data onto the CAN bus due to a component failure, the airbag control unit reports the reception error U1213.
The voltage supply also plays a crucial role. A weak battery with a resting voltage below 12.7 V or fluctuating charging voltages outside the range of 13.5–14.6 V can interfere with sensitive bus communications. Defective ground cables are another common culprit.
Rarely, the airbag control unit (ORC) itself is the source of the problem, especially when all other components—sensors, ABS module, wiring—have already been inspected or replaced, yet the fault persists.
Which vehicles are affected by U1213?
Error code U1213 occurs particularly frequently in Chrysler vehicles, especially the Chrysler Town & Country models from the NS and RT series, as well as the Grand Voyager. Similar errors related to communication problems with the ABS system have also been observed in Peugeot and Citroën models.

How is error code U1213 professionally repaired?
Professional repair focuses on addressing the actual hardware-related cause. After inspecting the vehicle’s wiring and power supply, the airbag control unit (ORC) is sent to a specialized service provider like Airbag24 for analysis. There, internal faults are corrected, and bus communication is restored.
First, a thorough diagnosis should be performed on the vehicle. This includes reading the fault memory using an appropriate diagnostic tool (e.g., Diagbox) and checking the battery voltage along with all relevant ground points and connector connections. Approximately 30–50% of cases can already be resolved by fixing these peripheral issues.
If the vehicle’s peripheral components are functioning properly, the airbag control unit is removed and sent in for repair with a detailed fault log. A direct replacement with a new part is often not advisable, as it too must be programmed, and the fault may persist if the root cause remains in the vehicle.
