What does error code U1401 mean?
Error code U1401 indicates a critical overvoltage in the vehicle’s electrical system that directly affects the airbag control unit. The control unit detects that the supply voltage exceeds allowable tolerances and, for safety reasons, switches to a fault mode. This results in deactivation of the airbag system and a persistent warning message.
Technically speaking, this means that the control unit’s internal protection circuits have registered a voltage significantly above the normal operating range of approximately 12–14.5 volts. Such an overvoltage poses a serious risk to the sensitive microelectronics, particularly the processor and memory chips.
Setting error code U1401 is therefore a protective measure to prevent irreparable hardware damage to the control unit. It clearly signals a problem with the vehicle’s power supply or an emerging defect within the control unit itself.
How do you recognize error U1401?
The main symptom of error U1401 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, warning messages may appear on the display indicating a malfunction of the occupant protection system. In some cases, communication with the control unit via a diagnostic tool may be limited.
The airbag warning light does not turn off after starting the vehicle and remains lit continuously. This is a clear indication that the entire airbag system has been deactivated as a precautionary measure and would not deploy in the event of a crash.
Another sign may be that workshops using their diagnostic equipment are unable to establish any connection—or only a limited connection—to the airbag control unit. The unit reports the overvoltage error but may block further diagnostic queries.
What causes error code U1401?
The most common cause of U1401 is an overvoltage in the vehicle’s electrical system, often triggered by a faulty alternator regulator (generator) or improper jump-start procedures. Other contributing factors include damaged wiring, corroded connectors, or an internal defect within the control unit itself, where components such as voltage regulators or capacitors fail.
External influences on the vehicle’s electrical system rank first among potential causes. A defective alternator regulator can generate voltage spikes far exceeding permissible levels, damaging electronic components. Using unsuitable chargers or performing incorrect jump-starts can also lead to such overvoltages.
Wiring issues represent another frequent source of trouble. Frayed cables, short circuits in the power supply lines, or severe corrosion at the control unit’s connectors can result in erroneous voltage readings. A poor ground connection (grounding problem) may also be responsible.
Finally, the fault may originate directly within the airbag control unit. Due to aging or sustained stress, internal components such as voltage regulators, capacitors, or other circuit board elements can fail, causing the control unit to no longer process incoming voltages correctly.
Often, error U1401 does not occur in isolation. Accompanying codes like U1011 (undervoltage), B1000 (internal control unit fault), or U1111 (communication loss) can highlight the complexity of the issue and aid in precise diagnosis.
In which vehicles does U1401 frequently occur?
Error code U1401 is particularly common across various Volkswagen models. The third- and fifth-generation VW Polo are especially prone to this issue. However, this voltage-related fault can occur in many vehicles whose control unit architecture is sensitive to fluctuations in the vehicle’s electrical system.

How is error U1401 professionally repaired?

The identified faulty electronic components are professionally desoldered and replaced with new, high-quality parts. The circuit board is then carefully cleaned to remove any residues, ensuring long-term stable performance.
After repair, the control unit is subjected to simulated operating conditions on a specialized test bench to confirm proper functionality. The fault memory is cleared, and once installed in the vehicle, the unit is immediately ready for use. We provide a 12-month warranty on every repair.
Is Repairing the Control Unit Worth It?
Repairing the original airbag control unit is the most economical and technically sound solution. Compared to purchasing a new part, you save significantly, avoid time-consuming reprogramming, and retain your vehicle’s original configuration. Additionally, it’s a sustainable option.
