What does error code U2117 mean?
The error code U2117 primarily indicates a communication problem with the airbag control unit via the CAN bus. The control unit is unable to establish a connection with other modules, such as the display (DIS) or the parking assist system (PDC). The cause often lies in the wiring, the connectors, or an internal defect within the control unit itself.
Technically speaking, the U-code (U = Network Communication) signifies a fault in the vehicle’s internal data network. The airbag control unit is an integral part of the CAN‑bus system and continuously exchanges data with other control units. When this communication is interrupted, the system registers error U2117 and, for safety reasons, illuminates the airbag warning light.
A so‑called “No Communication” error can manifest in many ways. Either the airbag control unit stops transmitting signals, or it can no longer receive and process signals from other nodes on the network. Consequently, the source of the fault may be in the control unit’s hardware, in peripheral components like cables and connectors, or even in another defective control unit that disrupts the bus.
How do you recognize error U2117?
The most obvious symptom of error U2117 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light in the instrument cluster. Additionally, the airbag control unit may become unreachable when using a diagnostic tool, making precise fault analysis difficult and indicating a serious communication failure.
The airbag warning light is activated by the system as soon as a malfunction in the safety system is detected. With error U2117, it remains lit continuously because the safe operation of the airbags can no longer be guaranteed due to the communication issue.
Another clear indication is the unsuccessful attempt to read the airbag control unit’s fault memory. If the diagnostic tool reports that communication with the module is impossible, this confirms suspicions of a disruption in the CAN bus or a complete failure of the control unit.
What are the most common causes of U2117?
The main causes of error code U2117 are communication disruptions in the CAN bus, triggered by faulty wiring, corroded or loose connectors. An internal hardware defect within the airbag control unit itself is also a frequent cause. Following a crash, stored crash data can further lock up the control unit.
A very common cause involves physical issues with the wiring. Connector contacts under the seats or the coil spring in the steering column are particularly susceptible to cable breaks or loose connections due to constant movement, which can interrupt the CAN bus.
Electronic components inside the airbag control unit itself may also fail, leading to an internal defect that disables the device’s ability to communicate. In such cases, the control unit can neither send nor receive, triggering error U2117.
After a collision, so‑called crash data is permanently stored in the control unit’s memory. This often results in the unit becoming locked, preventing it from participating in the CAN bus. The airbag warning light stays on until this data is professionally erased.
In which vehicles does error U2117 occur?
Error code U2117 is especially well known in certain Opel models, notably the Opel Rekord D, as well as models like the Opel Zafira A and the Opel Astra H. These vehicles use a CAN‑bus architecture where communication errors of this type can arise.
