What does error code U2174 mean?

Error code U2174 indicates a communication failure on the CAN bus to the airbag control unit (SRS). This means the control unit can no longer exchange data with other systems in the vehicle. The cause is usually defective hardware within the control unit itself, such as a faulty CAN transceiver or memory chip.

Technically, the code describes the message “CAN bus: No communication with EHS (Electronic Hazard Switch) / Airbag Control Unit.” Due to this fault, the airbag system is completely disabled and cannot respond to diagnostic requests via the OBD interface, making troubleshooting more difficult.

Inside the control unit, the CAN transceiver is responsible for sending and receiving data packets. If this component fails or the connection is interrupted by a short circuit, communication is blocked. Error code U2174 is then stored in other higher-level control units.

How do you recognize error code U2174?
