What does error code U303-17-87 mean?
Error code U303-17-87 indicates a specific and severe internal hardware defect in the airbag control module (RCM). It points to irreparable damage to critical electronic components such as the microcontroller, memory chip, or internal power supply. The control unit can no longer ensure its safety functions, resulting in a complete failure of the airbag system.
Technically speaking, this error code is a precise manufacturer‑specified indication. The “U303” portion denotes a general internal control unit fault. The “-17” qualifier identifies it as a hardware or memory error, while the “-87” is a manufacturer‑specific addition that highlights a deeper defect in the memory area or on the circuit board’s communication bus.
This type of error cannot be resolved through software updates or reprogramming, as the physical integrity of the electronics has been compromised. To ensure safety, the control unit detects its own malfunction and disables the entire restraint system.
How do you recognize error code U303-17-87?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code U303-17-87 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, the control unit may become inaccessible to diagnostic tools due to disrupted internal communication. No further warning messages are displayed, as the system has deactivated itself.
The airbag warning light fails to turn off after the vehicle is started, signaling to the driver that the passive safety system—including airbags and seatbelt pretensioners—will not function in the event of a crash.
In some cases, workshop scanners may be unable to establish a connection with the airbag control module (RCM). The internal hardware defect prevents the microcontroller from responding to external requests via the CAN bus, complicating diagnosis.
What causes error code U303-17-87?
The main cause of error code U303-17-87 is defective electronic components on the control unit’s circuit board. These include aging capacitors, voltage regulators, or the microcontroller itself. External factors such as moisture damage, corrosion, or voltage spikes in the vehicle’s electrical system can also destroy these sensitive components.
Aging-related failures are among the most common technical causes. Capacitors lose their capacitance, solder joints become brittle, or internal voltage regulators fail, leading to an unstable power supply for the microcontroller, which then permanently logs error code U303-17-87 in its memory.
Infiltrating moisture is another critical factor. It causes corrosion on the circuit board and can create short circuits between delicate conductive traces, irreparably damaging the electronics.
Voltage issues within the vehicle are also a frequent source. Error codes like U3003 (over/under supply voltage) or U3000 (control unit not functioning) often indicate problems with the battery or alternator that subsequently harm the airbag control unit. Accompanying errors may include U0151 (communication fault) or faults related to sensors (C2011–C2014) and seatbelt pretensioners (B0070).

Error code U303-17-87 primarily occurs in Mazda vehicles. In particular, the Mazda Familia BK model series is frequently affected by this specific internal control unit fault.
