Airbag control unit with part number 13589834

What does the airbag control unit 13589834 do?

The airbag control unit 13589834 is the central control unit for the restraint system of Chevrolet. It checks the sensors continuously, calculates in a crash the triggering of the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners, and shows faults via the airbag warning light.

In an accident the unit has very little time to decide which components to activate. It makes this decision on the basis of the sensor data, without you having to operate anything.

After an accident, the unit stores crash data and locks itself. Only the repair lifts the lock.

Why does the control unit 13589834 fail?

Stored crash data from an accident is the most common cause, even if no airbag has deployed. Other triggers are aged components, cold solder joints, moisture and corrosion at plug connections, and voltage spikes.

Stored crash data cannot be erased with a normal diagnostic tool. At Airbag24 it is erased during the repair.

Electronic components can age, solder joints can remain cold, and moisture affects plug connections. Voltage spikes, for example from a weak battery or a jump start, put additional strain on the electronics.

How can you tell that the 13589834 is defective?

A defect shows itself through the airbag warning light in the instrument cluster, which lights up permanently or intermittently. In addition there is a fault message in the instrument cluster, no connection between the diagnostic tool and the control unit, and a fault memory that cannot be cleared.

As long as this is the case, airbags and seatbelt pretensioners may not deploy in an emergency. The light is the visible sign to watch.

Only the fault memory shows whether the control unit itself is affected.
