Airbag control unit with part number 4896056AC

What does the airbag control unit 4896056AC do?

The airbag control unit 4896056AC controls the restraint system (SRS) of Dodge. It evaluates the crash sensors, decides in an accident within milliseconds which airbags and seatbelt pretensioners are triggered, and monitors the system continuously.

The control unit reports faults via the airbag warning light in the instrument cluster. It also stores them in the fault memory.

After an accident, it stores crash data and locks itself. The lock is lifted only by the repair.

Why does the control unit 4896056AC fail?

The most common cause is crash data stored after an accident, even if no airbag was triggered. A normal diagnostic tool cannot erase it. Other general causes are ageing of the electronics, moisture and voltage spikes.

• aged electronic components
• cold solder joints
• moisture and corrosion on plug connections
• voltage spikes, for example from a weak battery or jump-starting

Airbag24 removes the crash data during the repair. The inspection shows which of the other causes applies.

How can you tell that the 4896056AC is defective?

The airbag warning light in the instrument cluster lights up permanently or intermittently. Added to this are a fault message in the instrument cluster, a missing connection to the diagnostic tool, and a fault memory that cannot be cleared.

As long as the fault persists, airbags and seatbelt pretensioners may not be able to trigger in an emergency. Please have the warning checked promptly.
