What does the airbag control unit 89170-02200 do?

The airbag control unit 89170-02200 is the central control unit of the restraint system (SRS) of Toyota. It evaluates the measurements from the crash sensors, determines within milliseconds in an accident which airbags and seatbelt pretensioners are triggered, and monitors everything continuously. After an accident it stores crash data and locks itself.

The unit reports faults via the airbag warning light, so the display in the instrument cluster is the first indication.

Why does the control unit 89170-02200 fail?
