What does the airbag control unit 89170-42280 do?

The airbag control unit 89170-42280 is the central control unit of the restraint system (SRS) of Toyota. It evaluates the signals from the crash sensors, determines in an accident which airbags and seatbelt pretensioners are triggered, and monitors the system continuously for faults.

The unit reports faults via the airbag warning light. After an accident it stores crash data and locks itself.
