What does the airbag control unit 95910-P4000 do?

In the restraint system (SRS) of Kia, the airbag control unit 95910-P4000 is the central control unit. It processes the signals from the crash sensors and decides within fractions of a second in a crash which airbags and seatbelt pretensioners are triggered. After an accident it stores crash data and locks itself.

Even in normal operation the unit checks the system continuously. It reports faults via the airbag warning light.

Why does the control unit 95910-P4000 fail?
