Airbag control unit with part number 98820-6UD0B

What does the airbag control unit 98820-6UD0B do?

The airbag control unit 98820-6UD0B is the central control unit of the restraint system (SRS) for Nissan. It evaluates the signals from the crash sensors and decides in a crash which airbags and seatbelt pretensioners are triggered.

During operation it monitors the entire system continuously. It reports faults via the airbag warning light.

After an accident it stores crash data and locks itself.

Why does the control unit 98820-6UD0B fail?

The most common cause is crash data stored after an accident, even if no airbag has deployed. A normal diagnostic tool cannot erase it. Other causes are aged electronic components, cold solder joints, moisture and corrosion on plug connections, and voltage spikes.

Crash data can also be present after an accident in which no airbag was triggered. Airbag24 deletes it during the repair.

The other causes tend to develop gradually. Electronic components age, solder joints can stay cold, and moisture attacks plug connections. Voltage spikes arise, for example, from a weak battery or jump-starting.

How can you tell that the 98820-6UD0B is defective?

The airbag warning light in the instrument cluster lights up permanently or intermittently, and an error message appears. If the diagnostic tool cannot establish a connection to the 98820-6UD0B and the fault memory cannot be cleared, this is another sign of a fault.

In an emergency, airbags and seatbelt pretensioners may then not be able to trigger. The warning must therefore be checked.
