What is the function of the KT95 airbag control unit?
The airbag control unit with part number KT95 is the central control unit (SRS ECU) for the restraint system in the Daewoo Nexia N100 (model years 1994–1997). It processes signals from the crash sensors and is responsible for deploying the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners in the event of a collision, as well as monitoring the system.
As the SRS ECU (Supplemental Restraint System Electronic Control Unit), the KT95 serves as the brain of the passive safety system. It ensures that all components—from the airbags to the seatbelt pretensioners—are ready for operation at all times.
In case of a malfunction or system error, such as internally stored crash data, the control unit illuminates the SRS warning light on the dashboard to alert the driver to the fault and indicate the need for inspection.
Why does the KT95 airbag control unit fail?
The most common cause of failure for the KT95 control unit is the storage of crash data after an accident, even if the airbags did not deploy. This data permanently locks the device, preventing further functionality. Other causes may include water damage or electrical malfunctions, which can also result in such internal errors.
Following a collision, so‑called crash data is irrevocably recorded in the control unit’s memory. This is a manufacturer‑imposed safety measure that locks the device, preventing reuse without professional resetting.
A typical error code read in this context is B1111 (“control unit defective”). This error often cannot be cleared using standard diagnostic tools because the memory is blocked at the hardware level.
Rarely, hardware defects in internal components—such as the memory chip itself or cold solder joints—can also lead to failure, although this is less frequently the primary cause in the KT95.
How do you recognize a defect in the KT95 control unit?
A defective KT95 control unit typically manifests as a continuously illuminated airbag or SRS warning light on the dashboard. Additionally, the fault memory often cannot be cleared, with diagnostic tools frequently displaying error code B1111 (“control unit defective”). In this state, the airbag function is completely disabled.
The most obvious symptom is the persistently lit SRS warning lamp. It does not extinguish after starting the vehicle, indicating a serious, safety‑relevant system fault.
During a workshop diagnosis, communication with the control unit is possible, but the stored fault codes cannot be erased, confirming that the device is internally locked.
As a direct consequence of the defect, the entire airbag system becomes inoperative. In the event of another collision, the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners would fail to deploy, posing a significant safety risk.
