What is the function of the airbag control unit SU003-10047?
The airbag control unit with part number SU003-10047 is the central control module for the passive safety system in the Toyota GR86 ZN8. It continuously collects and processes data from the acceleration and yaw rate sensors to deploy the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners within milliseconds in the event of a crash, thereby protecting the occupants.
Its primary task is reliable crash detection. To achieve this, it analyzes signals from sensors distributed throughout the vehicle. When values indicate a collision, it activates the appropriate restraint systems in the correct sequence and intensity.
After deployment, the unit stores the crash data. This storage serves as a safety feature that prevents the vehicle from being operated with a potentially compromised system, necessitating professional repair of the control unit.
What defects occur in the SU003-10047?
The most common reason for repairing the SU003-10047 control unit is the retention of crash data after an accident, which blocks further use. Other typical defects include complete failure accompanied by a flashing airbag warning light, communication issues with diagnostic tools, or internal software errors that leave non‑erasable fault codes stored in memory.
Following a crash, crash data is permanently recorded in the control unit’s internal memory. These data cannot be erased through workshop diagnostics, making repair or replacement of the unit mandatory.

How do you recognize a defect in the SU003-10047?
A defect in the SU003-10047 airbag control unit primarily shows up as a constantly illuminated or flashing airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. The most obvious symptom is the activated airbag warning light. It does not turn off after starting the vehicle, signaling a serious fault in the restraint system that endangers occupant safety.
If a workshop’s diagnostic tool cannot communicate with the airbag control unit, this points to an internal malfunction. Reading or clearing fault codes is impossible in this condition.
Even if communication remains possible, specific fault codes indicating an “internal control unit error” may be stored in the error memory. These typically cannot be cleared using standard methods.
In which vehicles is the SU003-10047 control unit installed?
The airbag control unit with part number SU003-10047, along with its identical counterparts SU003-10048, SU003-11253, SU003-11717, and 98221CC061, is specifically installed in the Toyota GR86 of the ZN8 series starting from model year 2021. Other models do not use this particular control unit.

The actual repair takes place at the component level. Stored crash data is securely deleted, and defective parts are replaced. Following restoration, the full functionality of the control unit is verified on a test bench.
