BYD airbag control unit repair(14)

Is the airbag warning light on in your BYD? Choose your model, remove the control unit and send it to us for testing and repair.

What should be considered with BYD airbag control units?

With BYD airbag control units, the exact model and year of manufacture matter, as the vehicles have only been on the road in this market for a few years. We repair the removed control unit in our workshop in Berlin on a send-in basis.

BYD originates from China and has officially offered its electric cars in Europe since autumn 2022. Many models are still young, yet their airbag control unit can also be defective, for instance after an accident with stored crash data, through an internal electronics fault or through voltage problems.

The airbag warning light then stays on permanently, or diagnostics report a fault in the SRS system. As the airbag system is safety-critical, you should not work on it yourself. Additional safety rules apply to electric and hybrid vehicles, so removal belongs in a specialist workshop.

Which BYD models are there?

In our shop we list eleven BYD models, from the Dolphin Surf small car and the Atto 3 and Sealion 7 SUVs to the Han saloon. Each model and series uses its own airbag control unit.

  • BYD Dolphin
  • BYD Dolphin Surf
  • BYD Atto 2
  • BYD Atto 3
  • BYD Seal
  • BYD Seal U
  • BYD Seal 6
  • BYD Seal 5
  • BYD Sealion 7
  • BYD Han
  • BYD e6

For some models we distinguish several series, for example the Atto 3 before and after its facelift, or the Seal 6 as a saloon and as a Touring. Therefore choose not only the model but also the matching production period.

How do I identify my BYD airbag control unit?

You identify your BYD airbag control unit by the part number on the unit. Together with model, year of manufacture and vehicle identification number, it allows the matching product to be assigned unambiguously.

The part number is usually on a sticker on the housing. It can only be read after a specialist workshop has removed the unit. Have the control unit removed by qualified staff only and send it to us well packed.

Fault codes that can be read out give further clues. Among others, these messages are known for BYD: B16AE00 (fault in the SRS control unit), B17A000 (internal control unit fault), B17A200 (crash recording locked), B17A600 (frontal impact detected), B17A800 (CAN bus interrupted), B1694 (supply voltage too low), B1695 (supply voltage too high) and B1600 (driver front airbag not connected). A code does not replace a diagnosis, however.

What airbag equipment does BYD have?

BYD's airbag equipment depends on the model, the year of manufacture and the trim level. Front and side airbags as well as curtain airbags are usual; the owner's manual tells you which airbags your vehicle actually has.

The airbag control unit evaluates the signals from the sensors in the vehicle and, in an emergency, triggers the appropriate restraint systems. If it does not work correctly, deployment may be impaired. This is a considerable safety risk that you should not put off.

During the repair we erase stored crash data and test the electronics. The repaired control unit comes back with all vehicle data and is ready for use immediately after refitting.
