What should be considered with BYD e6 airbag control units?
The BYD e6 airbag control unit evaluates the crash sensors, triggers the airbags and monitors the entire airbag system. If it detects a fault, it reports this via the airbag warning light on the instrument panel.
In the event of an accident, the control unit triggers the airbags and seat belt tensioners. To do so, it evaluates the sensor signals within a very short time. If the control unit is defective, the protective function of the entire system may be impaired.
After an accident, the control unit stores crash data and locks itself. The airbag system is safety-relevant, so diagnosis and repair should be carried out by a specialist workshop. You should not work on the airbag system yourself. Airbag24 repairs your own control unit, which you send in for repair.
Which BYD e6 generations are there?
At Airbag24, the BYD e6 is currently listed in one generation: the 1st generation, built from 2011 to 2017. Whether your vehicle falls within this period can be seen from the year of manufacture and the vehicle papers.
Allocating the control unit depends on the year of manufacture, the part number on the unit and the vehicle identification number (VIN).
- 1st generation (2011–2017) – electric MPV, currently the only series listed for the BYD e6 at Airbag24
How do I identify my BYD e6 airbag control unit?
The part number on the label of the control unit determines the exact version. Together with the year of manufacture and the equipment of your vehicle, it allows the matching control unit to be identified.
The label with the part number is often located directly on the housing of the control unit. Note the number before the unit is removed, and keep the vehicle identification number (VIN) to hand.
If the system detects a fault, a fault code is stored in the fault memory. Examples from the BYD e6 fault list:
- B16AE00: fault in the SRS control unit
- B17A200: crash recording locked
- B1694: supply voltage too low
A single fault code does not in itself prove a defect in the control unit. A specialist workshop determines the cause through diagnosis of the vehicle.
What airbag equipment does the BYD e6 have?
Which airbags are fitted in the BYD e6 depends on the market and trim level. The equipment of your specific vehicle is therefore the point of reference.
In general, the airbag equipment may include driver and front passenger airbags. Depending on the market and trim level, side, head or knee airbags may be added.
The control unit coordinates the fitted airbags and seat belt tensioners. A defect in the control unit can therefore affect the triggering of several airbags.
The repair process at Airbag24 works as follows: first have the fault memory read out. Because the BYD e6 is an electric vehicle, leave disconnecting the battery and removing the control unit to a specialist workshop. Then create a repair order online and send the control unit to Airbag24. Processing usually takes 3–4 working days and covers checking, repairing and testing the unit.
The repaired control unit comes back with all vehicle data and is ready for use immediately after reinstallation — no coding or programming is necessary.
