Isuzu D-Max airbag control unit repair(3)

What should be considered with Isuzu D-Max airbag control units?

The airbag control unit in the Isuzu D-Max evaluates the signals from the crash sensors, triggers the airbags and seat belt pretensioners, and monitors the entire airbag system. If it detects a fault, the airbag warning light comes on. After an accident, it stores crash data and locks itself. Airbag24 repairs the control unit you send in.

The control unit works together with the impact sensors and the airbag firing circuits. It checks these circuits continuously and stores detected faults in the fault memory. A defective control unit can impair the triggering of the airbags.

The repair includes deleting the stored crash data, checking for faults and repairing defective components inside the unit. Because the airbag system is safety-relevant, work on the control unit should be left to a specialist workshop.

Which Isuzu D-Max generations are there?

The Isuzu D-Max is available in two generations: the RT85 series was built from 2012 to 2019, and the current RG series has been offered since 2020. The model year and the vehicle identification number show which generation your vehicle belongs to.

  • RG (since 2020): current generation of the D-Max
  • RT85 (2012–2019): previous generation of the D-Max

The two generations differ in electronics and airbag equipment, so assigning the control unit to the vehicle is the first step of every repair.

The unit version can also change within one generation. Checking the model year and equipment prevents mix-ups.

How do I identify my Isuzu D-Max airbag control unit?

The part number on the label of the control unit determines the exact version. Compare it with the model year and equipment of your vehicle before you send the unit in.

The part number on the label is the most important reference point. For the RT85 series, the following part numbers are known, without claim to completeness:

  • 898146938Y
  • 898156441Y
  • 898159361Y

The same applies to the RG series: the part number on the unit determines the version, not the model name alone.

Fault codes help narrow down the cause. As examples for both series, we list B1000 (internal fault in the control unit), U0151 (communication with the control unit interrupted), B0001 (driver airbag firing circuit disturbed) and B0083 (signal fault at the front impact sensor). A single code does not prove a defect in the control unit, however. With sensors, the cause is often at the connector contacts or a corroded sensor.

Which airbag equipment does the Isuzu D-Max have?

The Isuzu D-Max has front, side and curtain airbags. In the current RG series, a driver's knee airbag is added. The exact equipment depends on the cab and trim level.

The RT85 series lists driver and front passenger airbags, side airbags and curtain airbags in its owner's manual. Which additional airbags a particular vehicle has depends on its equipment.

For the RG series, front, side and curtain airbags and a driver's knee airbag are part of the standard equipment according to manufacturer information and a test report.

The repair process at Airbag24 runs as follows: first have the fault memory read out. Then disconnect the battery and remove the control unit. Next, create a repair order online and send the unit to us. Processing usually takes 3–4 working days (checking, repairing, testing).

The repaired control unit comes back with all vehicle data and is ready for use as soon as it is refitted — coding or programming is not necessary.
