The airbag technology used in the Kia Pride varies considerably depending on the model year and specific production period. The Kia Pride, originally conceived as an affordable and functional subcompact, was produced in its first generation from March 1987 to January 2000. After a hiatus, the name was reused between 2005 and 2017 for the second and third generation Kia Rio in South Korea, which were then marketed as "Kia Pride" or "New Pride." In addition, there are various Iranian derivatives, some of which were produced until 2020, such as the Saipa 151 pickup truck.
The airbag systems in the Kia Pride were initially very rudimentary. The driver's airbag was only integrated into the model around 1996 and was the only airbag available.
The Rio-based models, later renamed Pride, saw significant advancements to meet the increased safety standards. The complexity of the airbag control units increased accordingly, from simple designs for a single airbag to systems capable of managing multiple airbags and sensors.
The Kia Pride was produced in several distinct phases and as rebrands of other, more technologically advanced models. The first and arguably best-known generation of the Kia Pride ran from 1987 to 2000. It included various body styles, such as the three- and five-door hatchback, the four-door sedan ("Pride Beta"), as well as station wagon and MPV versions. A facelift took place in 1993, which primarily brought visual and minor technical adjustments, but the basic structure of the airbag system remained simple.
Starting in 2005, the name "Kia Pride" was revived in South Korea for the second and third generations of the Kia Rio (UB series from 2011). These models were technically significantly more modern, offered enhanced safety features, and were marketed under this name until 2017.
In addition, there are specific Iranian derivatives, some of which were produced until 2020, such as the Saipa 151 pickup truck. Each of these production phases brought with it specific requirements for the airbag control units, underscoring the diversity of the vehicles marketed under the "Pride" name.
Kia Pride airbag control units can be reliably identified by the part number affixed to the unit, the vehicle's year of manufacture, and the vehicle identification number (VIN). Given the long production runs and the various model variants, precise identification is essential for correct repair or replacement.
The part number is the most important indicator. It is usually located on a label directly on the airbag control unit itself. In earlier Kia Pride models (up to 2000), these are often numbers like OEM number 724244, which represent relatively simple systems that primarily control one or two front airbags. These control units are typically installed in the center console area or under the front seats.
For the later "Pride" models based on the Kia Rio (from 2005 onwards), the part numbers are more complex and indicate advanced systems that integrate multiple airbags (front, side, and head) and additional sensors.
