Lotus Emira airbag control unit repair(1)

What should I pay attention to with Lotus Emira airbag control units?

The airbag control unit of the Lotus Emira evaluates the crash sensors, triggers the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners, and monitors the entire system. If it detects a fault, the airbag warning light comes on. After an accident involving deployment, the control unit stores crash data and locks itself; Airbag24 repairs your own control unit when you send it in.

The control unit is the central evaluation unit of the passive safety system in the Emira. In a crash, it decides within a few milliseconds which airbags and seatbelt pretensioners are triggered. To do this, it processes the signals from the crash sensors and continuously checks the trigger circuits.

A defective control unit is safety-relevant. The airbag warning light may stay on permanently, and in an emergency the system may not deploy as intended. Work on the airbag system should therefore be left to a specialist workshop. Whether a particular unit can be repaired only becomes clear after inspection at our workshop in Berlin.

Which Lotus Emira generations are there?

The Lotus Emira has been built since 2022 and is so far available in a single generation. It is a two-seat sports car with a mid-mounted engine, built at Lotus’s plant in Hethel, England.

The series has been in production since its market launch in 2022 and is still ongoing. When assigning a control unit, build year and specification count for more than the model name alone.

  • Emira (since 2022) – current series, two-seat sports car with mid-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive. Production is still ongoing.

How do I identify my Lotus Emira airbag control unit?

The part number on the label of the control unit determines the exact specification. Together with the build year and equipment of the Lotus Emira, it allows the matching unit to be identified. The vehicle identification number (VIN) helps as well.

The label is usually attached directly to the housing of the control unit. Read the number in full and note the build year and the VIN from the vehicle documents. These details make it possible to check whether the specification matches your vehicle.

When the fault memory is read, fault codes appear. Examples for the Lotus Emira are U0151 (communication with the airbag control unit lost), B0001 and B0002 (driver’s front airbag, stage 1 or stage 2, trigger circuit faulty) and B0010 (front passenger airbag, stage 1, trigger circuit faulty). A fault code on its own does not prove a defect in the control unit; only diagnosis reveals the cause.

What airbag equipment does the Lotus Emira have?

According to the manufacturer, the Lotus Emira has front airbags for driver and passenger, as well as side (thorax) airbags and curtain airbags. Which airbags are fitted in a particular vehicle depends on its build year and equipment.

Lotus’s online configurators list driver and passenger airbags, curtain airbags and thorax airbags as standard equipment for the Emira. Vehicle databases sometimes give different information, for example without curtain airbags. The equipment of an individual Emira should therefore be checked using the vehicle documents or the VIN before the unit is sent in.

The route to repair: have the fault memory read, and have a specialist workshop disconnect the battery and remove the control unit. Then create a repair order online and send in the unit. Processing usually takes 3–4 working days: checking, repairing and testing.

The repaired control unit returns with all vehicle data and is ready for use immediately after reinstallation — no coding or programming is required.
