What should I consider with MAN airbag control units?

For MAN, airbag control unit repair currently covers the MAN TGE van, which has been on the market since 2017. The airbag control unit evaluates the vehicle's sensors and triggers the airbags in an accident. If it is faulty, the airbag warning light usually comes on.

MAN is mainly known as a manufacturer of trucks and buses. The TGE is a van that MAN Truck & Bus offers within the Volkswagen Group and that is based on the second-generation Volkswagen Crafter.

Typical reasons for a repair are crash data stored after an accident, internal faults caused by ageing electronics, a supply voltage that is too low, or moisture at the connectors. On the MAN TGE, the fault memory typically shows codes such as B1600 (critical internal fault of the control unit), B2D92 (severe hardware damage, often occurring together with B1600) and B1003 (supply voltage too low).

The airbag system is safety-critical. Have any work on it carried out only by a specialist workshop and do not try to deactivate the system yourself. We repair the removed control unit in our workshop in Berlin. The repaired control unit comes back with all vehicle data and is ready for use immediately after refitting.

Which MAN models are there?

For MAN, the shop currently lists the MAN TGE van, series SY from 2017.

The TGE was introduced in 2017 and is a close relative of the Volkswagen Crafter. For the repair, however, what counts is not the family relationship but the part number of your control unit. We will add further MAN models as soon as they are set up in the shop.

How do I identify my MAN airbag control unit?

You can identify your MAN airbag control unit by the part number on the label on the unit. Together with the year of manufacture and the vehicle identification number (VIN), this allows the correct control unit to be matched unambiguously.

To read the part number, the control unit has to be removed. A specialist workshop should do this, because the airbag system is safety-critical. The installation location depends on the vehicle.

Send the removed control unit to Airbag24, well packed. On request, UPS will collect the parcel from you or your workshop for an extra charge. Please enclose the fault memory printout from your workshop, for example with the codes B1600, B2D92 or B1003.

What airbag equipment does MAN have?

Which airbags are fitted in the MAN TGE depends on the version and equipment. Airbags for the driver and front passenger are usual, and further ones may be added depending on the vehicle. This can only be determined reliably for the individual vehicle.

The airbag control unit processes the signals from the sensors and decides in an emergency which restraint systems deploy. A malfunction can impair deployment and is a considerable safety risk.

If the airbag warning light stays on, or if the vehicle has been in an accident, the fault memory should be read out. After an accident, crash data is stored in the control unit and must be erased before the vehicle is put back into service. A defective airbag control unit that no longer communicates should also be checked.
