Mercedes-Benz T-Class airbag control unit repair

Mercedes-Benz T-Class airbag control unit repair(1)

What should be considered with Mercedes-Benz T-Klasse airbag control units?

The airbag control unit of the Mercedes-Benz T-Klasse evaluates the crash sensors, triggers the airbags and belt tensioners, and monitors the entire airbag system. Faults are reported via the airbag warning light. After an accident, the control unit stores crash data and locks itself.

The Mercedes-Benz T-Klasse is a compact high-roof van that has been built since 2022. Sensors, airbag modules and the control unit work closely together within the system. A defective control unit can affect the function of the entire system, which is why every fault should be checked by a specialist workshop.

Airbag24 repairs your own airbag control unit, which you send to us. If required, we erase the crash data so that the system is ready for use again. Airbags are safety-relevant, so you should not work on the airbag system yourself; removal and installation belong in a specialist workshop.

Which Mercedes-Benz T-Klasse generations are there?

The Mercedes-Benz T-Klasse is listed in the W420 series, which has been built since 2022 and is still in production. You can tell whether your vehicle belongs to this series from its vehicle identification number (VIN).

Within the series, design and equipment differ depending on the year of manufacture and trim level. For this reason, a control unit should not be assigned on the basis of the model name alone.

How do I identify my Mercedes-Benz T-Klasse airbag control unit?

The part number on the label of the control unit determines the exact version. Together with the year of manufacture and equipment of your T-Klasse, it shows which unit is installed. The vehicle identification number (VIN) helps to confirm these details.

Note the part number in full before the unit is removed. It is the most important point of reference for assigning version and equipment.

The fault memory may show codes such as B1000 (fault in the airbag control unit), B1561 (crash threshold exceeded, crash data stored) or U0151 (communication with the airbag control unit lost). A single fault code does not prove a defect, however. A specialist workshop determines the cause with a full diagnosis.

What airbag equipment does the Mercedes-Benz T-Klasse have?

According to Mercedes-Benz, seven airbags are fitted as standard equipment in the T-Klasse. These include a center airbag, side airbags and head airbags. Which modules are installed in a specific vehicle depends on its equipment.

The side airbags are integrated into the outer seat backs and protect the chest and pelvis of the front occupants in a side impact. The head airbags (window bags) in the roof lining protect the heads of occupants on the outer seats, both at the front and at the rear.

If the airbag warning light is illuminated or airbags were triggered in an accident, proceed as follows: have the fault memory read out, have the battery disconnected and the control unit removed, preferably by a specialist workshop. Then create a repair order online and send the unit to Airbag24 by parcel.

Processing usually takes 3–4 working days (checking, repairing, testing). The repaired control unit is returned with all vehicle data and is ready for use as soon as it is refitted — coding or programming is not necessary.
