MG airbag control unit repair(22)

Is the airbag warning light on in your MG? Select the matching control unit and send it to us for testing or repair.

What should be considered with MG airbag control units?

For an MG airbag control unit repair, the unit must match the model, series and equipment. We test a defective MG airbag control unit in our workshop in Berlin, erase stored crash data and repair the electronics.

MG is a brand of British origin and today belongs to the Chinese group SAIC Motor. As a result, two very different groups of vehicles are on our roads: the MG ZR, ZS and ZT from the early 2000s and newer models such as the MG 4, MG 5 or MG HS. Both groups use their own airbag control units, which differ in design and software.

Typical signs of a defective airbag control unit are a permanently lit airbag warning light, a communication error during diagnosis or crash data stored after an accident. Because the system is safety-critical, testing and repair should be carried out by a specialist workshop only. Working on the airbag system yourself is not recommended.

The process is simple: you send the removed control unit to Airbag24 by parcel, well packed, or have UPS collect it from you or your garage on request. After the repair it is returned to you by UPS.

Which MG models are there?

For MG we handle airbag control units from the MG ZR to the MG Cyberster. Every model and generation can use its own control unit, so we match your unit by model and year of manufacture.

The range runs from vehicles built from 2001 to the current electric models. The following MG models are listed in our shop:

  • MG ZR
  • MG ZS
  • MG ZT
  • MG 3
  • MG 4
  • MG 5
  • MG 6
  • MG HS
  • MG S5
  • MG Cyberster

Some models were built in several generations, for example the MG 3, MG HS and MG ZS. Select the generation in the shop that matches your year of manufacture. The MG 4 has been on sale here since 2022.

How do I identify my MG airbag control unit?

You can identify your MG airbag control unit by the part number on the unit's label. Together with model, year of manufacture and vehicle identification number (VIN), the correct variant can be determined unambiguously.

Where the control unit is located depends on the model. It is often found in the interior near the centre console or under the seats. Removal belongs in a workshop, because the battery has to be disconnected and the airbag system handled correctly.

The fault code from the diagnostic memory also helps. On MG vehicles, codes such as B0001 and B0010 (driver or passenger front airbag deployment circuit faulty), B0090 and B0095 (left or right front crash sensor faulty), B1932 and B193E (deployment data recording) and U0151 (communication with the airbag control unit lost) occur, among others. A code alone does not replace testing the unit.

What airbag equipment does MG have?

MG's airbag equipment depends on the year of manufacture, model and trim level. Front airbags for the driver and front passenger are usual; depending on the model, side and curtain airbags are added.

Which airbags are fitted to your vehicle can be found in the owner's manual or the equipment documents. The airbag control unit evaluates the signals from the crash sensors and decides which restraint systems deploy in an emergency.

If the control unit fails, the system may not react as intended in an accident. Have an illuminated airbag warning light checked promptly. The repaired control unit comes back with all vehicle data and is ready for use immediately after refitting.
