What should you know about Nissan Townstar airbag control units?
The Nissan Townstar airbag control unit evaluates the crash sensors, triggers the airbags and belt tensioners, and monitors the entire airbag system. If a fault occurs, the system signals it through the airbag warning light.
After an accident, the control unit stores the crash data and locks itself. A defect in the control unit itself can also switch on the airbag warning light. The airbag system is safety-critical, so diagnosis and removal should be left to a specialist workshop.
Airbag24 repairs the customer's own control unit that is sent in. Whether a particular unit can be repaired only becomes clear after our inspection.
Which Nissan Townstar generations are there?
The Nissan Townstar has been built since 2022. So far the model range comprises one generation, the 1st generation, whose production run is still ongoing.
Within a generation, the exact design of the airbag control unit can differ depending on model year and equipment. The model year and part number are therefore more informative for identification than the generation designation alone.
- 1st generation (since 2022, production still ongoing) – the generation for which we currently offer a repair product.
How do I identify my Nissan Townstar airbag control unit?
The part number on the label of the control unit determines the exact design. The model year and equipment of your vehicle are also important, as they narrow down the assignment.
Read the part number directly from the unit before creating a repair order. Also note the model year and the vehicle identification number (VIN), so that the unit can be clearly assigned.
As examples, we list the fault codes B1100 (airbag control unit fault), B1209 (frontal collision detected, crash data stored in the control unit) and U1000 (CAN communication line disturbed). A single fault code does not prove a defect in the control unit, however. Only a diagnosis at a specialist workshop clarifies the cause.
What airbag equipment does the Nissan Townstar have?
According to European NCAP test data, the Nissan Townstar comes as standard with front airbags for driver and front passenger, side head airbags for driver, front passenger and rear seats, and side chest airbags at the front. Knee, pelvis and centre airbags are not fitted in this equipment.
These details refer to the tested version of the model series. Equipment and availability can differ depending on market, model year and version. The vehicle itself is decisive; if in doubt, the owner's manual provides information.
Your route to repair: have the fault memory read at a specialist workshop and have the control unit removed there; the workshop disconnects the battery during removal. Then create a repair order online and send the unit to us, securely packed. Processing usually takes 3–4 working days for checking, repairing and testing.
The repaired control unit returns with all vehicle data and is ready for use immediately after reinstallation — coding or programming is not necessary.
