What does error code 0B in the airbag control unit indicate?
Error code 0B indicates a serious internal fault in the airbag control unit (SRS). This means that the central control module of the safety system has detected an internal malfunction in its own hardware or software. As a result, the system is typically no longer fully operational, compromising occupant safety.
Technically speaking, this diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is set when the control unit’s internal self-diagnosis identifies a defect on the circuit board. Such defects can range from damaged electronic components and short circuits to aging-related issues in the electronics.
As a consequence of this internal fault, the control unit often switches the airbag system into a safety mode to prevent unintended deployments. Communication via the CAN bus for reading out the unit may also be blocked or severely impaired.
How do you recognize error code 0B?
The primary symptom of error code 0B is a permanently illuminated or flashing airbag warning light on the dashboard. Often, the airbag control unit can no longer be accessed or read by a diagnostic tool. Consequently, the entire airbag system is deactivated, posing a significant safety risk.
The most obvious sign is the activated airbag warning light, which fails to extinguish after starting the vehicle—indicating a persistent, safety‑critical fault requiring immediate attention.
Another critical symptom is the failure of diagnostic communication. If a workshop attempts to read the fault memory, they may receive no response from the SRS control unit, as the internal fault blocks communication capabilities.
If the fault memory is successfully read, code 0B will appear as “internal fault” or with a similar description, directing diagnosis straight to a defect within the control unit itself.
What causes error code 0B?
The main cause of error code 0B is internal hardware failure within the control unit. This includes damaged components, short circuits caused by moisture, or aging of the electronics. Another common reason is crash data stored in memory after an accident, which locks the unit and triggers the error.
First and foremost are physical damages to the electronics. Defective microprocessors, memory chips, or other components on the circuit board can fail due to vibrations, water ingress, or simply material fatigue, disabling the entire device.
Following a collision, so‑called crash data is permanently stored in the control unit’s memory. To ensure safety, this data locks the unit against reuse, potentially triggering error code 0B and necessitating professional reset procedures.
Rarely, malfunctions in the CAN bus connection, faulty connectors leading to the control unit, or firmware issues can disrupt the internal logic and provoke this specific error code.
In which vehicles does error 0B occur?
