What does error code 8 in the airbag control unit indicate?
Error code 8 in an airbag control unit indicates a specific fault in the ignition circuit of the side airbag. This points to an electronic issue where the airbag’s activation can no longer be reliably ensured. The cause usually lies in defective components on the circuit board responsible for signal processing and power supply to this ignition circuit.
Technically speaking, this means the control unit has detected an irregularity—such as an incorrect resistance value or a short circuit—in the electrical circuit leading to the side airbag module. Due to this malfunction, the entire airbag system is deactivated as a precautionary measure to prevent unintended deployment.
This is a safety-critical fault that requires immediate diagnosis and repair, as occupant protection during a side impact is no longer guaranteed.
How do you recognize error code 8?
The primary symptom of error code 8 is the persistent illumination of the airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Often, the control unit can no longer be reliably read by diagnostic equipment, or communication issues arise. The fault memory explicitly displays an error in the side airbag ignition circuit.
The airbag warning light—typically a red or yellow symbol—does not extinguish after starting the vehicle. This is the clearest indication of an active, stored fault within the system.
In many cases, communication with the airbag control unit is disrupted. Workshops find that the diagnostic tool cannot establish a connection, or the retrieved data appears implausible, complicating troubleshooting.
If the fault memory is successfully read, the entry “Error 8 – Side Airbag Ignition Circuit” or a manufacturer-specific but essentially identical description will be displayed, confirming the defect in the relevant ignition circuit.
What causes error code 8?
The main cause of error code 8 is hardware failure on the airbag control unit’s circuit board, often in the area of the side airbag ignition circuit. This may result from defective SMD components or contact problems. Following a crash, stored crash data can also lock the control unit.
The most common reason is the failure of electronic components directly on the circuit board. Aging processes or thermal stress can lead to defects in resistors, capacitors, or driver circuits (SMD components) responsible for activating the side airbag.
Another significant cause is stored crash data. After an accident, the control unit permanently retains this information and locks itself out of further use. This lock must be lifted through specialized repair; simply clearing the fault memory is insufficient.
In addition to error code 8, other faults frequently appear, indicating a more extensive malfunction. These include codes such as 240 (Internal Control Unit Error), 2 (Left Seatbelt Pretensioner Ignition Circuit), 22–23 (Side Airbag Impact Sensor Fault), or 26 (Seat Occupancy Detection Malfunction). Diagnosis must take these codes into account as well.
In which models does error code 8 occur?
Error code 8 occurs across various manufacturers and models. Mercedes-Benz control units, particularly those found in the SLK R170 or A-Class W176, are especially affected. Models from Fiat, such as the Doblo, as well as sporty classics like the Porsche 944, can also exhibit this specific fault in the side airbag ignition circuit.
