What does error code B023 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code B023 indicates an internal, typically hardware-related fault in the airbag control unit. Usually, electronic components on the circuit board—such as capacitors, resistors, or integrated circuits (ICs)—are defective. The control unit no longer passes its self-test and cannot guarantee the proper functioning of the safety system.
This condition results in the deactivation of the entire airbag system to prevent false activations. The error is permanently stored in the fault memory and cannot be cleared without professional electronics repair.
In some cases, code B023 may also point to a malfunction in the control unit’s internal communication or to a crash data entry that was not properly reset after an accident.
How can you recognize error B023?
The most obvious symptom of error B023 is a continuously illuminated or flashing airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Often, communication with the control unit via a diagnostic tool is also impossible, as it no longer responds to requests. The error is displayed as “current” and persists even after attempting a reset.
The airbag warning light does not extinguish upon vehicle start-up as usual but remains constantly active. This is a clear indication that the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) has detected a critical fault and is not operational.
Another characteristic is that workshops can no longer read the control unit. Attempts to establish a connection through the OBD interface fail, complicating diagnosis and suggesting a severe internal defect.
What causes error code B023?
The primary cause of B023 is internal hardware failure on the control unit’s circuit board. These include aging-related failures of capacitors and resistors, short circuits caused by moisture, or defective ICs. Additionally, crash data that was not properly erased after an accident can permanently store this error code.
Aging of electronic components is a common source of errors. Over time, solder joints may become brittle, or capacitors may lose their capacitance, leading to malfunctions and the recording of B023.
Another significant cause is stored crash data. After a collision, the control unit locks itself internally to prevent re‑triggering. If this data record is not completely and correctly removed, the device reports a permanent internal fault.
External sources of error—such as faulty crash sensors, issues with seat occupancy detection, or damaged wiring harnesses—can, though less frequently, also lead to internal processing errors that manifest as code B023.
In which vehicles does error B023 occur?
Error code B023 is particularly well-known in specific Porsche models that use certain types of airbag control units. The classic Porsche 968 Coupé and the modern Porsche 718 Boxster T are among the most frequently affected. At Airbag24, this error code is professionally repaired for these models.
